Will auto insurance companies try to lapse you if you leave them?
I heard that auto insurance companies will cancel your policy, causing you to lapse, if they find out you are leaving them, is that true? I am planning on buying a new auto policy this week that will go in effect on Apr 1 and faxing in my request to cancel my current policy on that same day, am I safe?

Yes, you’re safe, it’s against the law for the company to just cancel you for no reason before that time. I know that in my state (and I believe most others) they are required to give you at least 30 days notice of canceling your policy unless it is for nonpayment of premium.
For car insurance the most efficient way to get a great quote is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you compare similar policies with the same deductibles, car type, zip code, etc so that all options are a good comparison.
What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at since they have big name insurers and can give several quotes on car insurance polices.
There are lots of places where you can get a free insurance quote. It only takes roughly 10 minutes to do.
Yes, you are safe. Any unearned premium from the cancelled policy will be returned to you and any premium you may owe will be billed to you. All legitimate auto insurance carriers will honor your request promptly and correctly and hope that you consider them again in the future to insure your car.

If you’re paid up until April 1, no, they can’t.
